Neuropsychological Assessment

Neuropsychological Assessment is a comprehensive evaluation of an individual’s cognitive state. It includes a complete assessment across cognitive domains, such as language, memory, attention, and visual spatial functioning. The goal of neuropsychological testing is to establish or clarify an existing diagnosis related to neurological functioning and to measure the degree of impairment related to the cognitive dysfunction. Typically, neuropsychological assessment is recommended to adult clients when they develop cognitive difficulties, which may relate to a neurological disorder, such as brain injury, stroke, or dementia. Following the evaluation, Dr. Shikhman produces a complete report to the client or to the referring physician that details the results of the testing and offers suggestions with regard to compensatory strategies and resources. Under certain circumstances, Dr. Shikhman gives recommendations as to whether or not the client can remain safe in an independent-living environment.

Neurocognitive Screening

Neurocognitive Screening is helpful in clarifying client’s individual strengths and weaknesses. It consists of brief neuropsychological testing of various cognitive domains. It is offered to individuals who have never been diagnosed with a neurological condition, but who feel that their cognitive functioning is compromised and interferes with their daily lives. A good candidate for this screening would be an individual who feels that he or she is smart and motivated, but has difficulty achieving professional goals, or an individual who feels that something is not right with them, although they just can’t quite put their finger on it. Following the completion of the screening, Dr. Shikhman provides a short written report of her evaluation and offers appropriate recommendations and coping strategies to suit the unique needs of each client. When appropriate, Dr. Shikhman gives referrals to other providers, who may be helpful in improving the individual’s cognitive functioning.
